about

Sam Morrison replaced Sonny Fortune in Miles Davis' band in 1975. Miles is quoted as saying "I haven't heard that much fire on the saxophone since 'Trane was in my band". Like D3 drummer Bruce Ditmas, Sam had played with Gil Evans, though during a different period than Bruce. Bassist Tony DeCicco, who had been gigging with Sam regularly had suggested Sam as a guest on the next D3 record for which engineer and producer Jim DeSalvo had already procured Mofat studio near Paterson, NJ. Guitarist Jack DeSalvo and Ditmas both enthusiastically welcomed Sam into the project. This is the first of two D3 albums on UR with a special guest, the second being with trumpeter Matt Lavelle. The resulting tracks on this album, D3+1.0 is an extraordinary collection of music with sonic paths to other worlds from four of the world's preeminent improvisers.
